If spending money on yourself feels uncomfortable, there’s a reason. It’s not selfishness. It’s conditioning. |
Here’s what we mean:
Helpers, caregivers, and high-empathy people are often wired to prioritize others first. Over time, this becomes identity.
So, when it’s time to spend on yourself, your nervous system flags it as “wrong” or “too much,” even if it’s reasonable.
Dollars and Sense
I once worked with someone who could easily spend on her kids, her partner, even her friends. But when it came to herself, everything felt excessive.
She told me about standing in a store, holding something she genuinely needed. Not even a luxury. Just something that would make her life easier.
And still, she put it back.
Her thought wasn’t “I can’t afford this. It was, “I shouldn’t.”
That word stayed with me.
Shouldn’t.
We unpacked it slowly. Where it came from. What it meant. Who taught her that her needs were negotiable. Over time, she practiced small shifts. Buying the thing. Sitting with the discomfort instead of avoiding it.
Not because spending was the goal. But because self-permission was.

Start with a “self-allowed” category in your spending.
A small, intentional amount that is just for you. No justification required. It’s not about the money. It’s about rebuilding permission.
