🪞Stop Splitting the Bill with Your Self-Worth

Wealth and Wisdom
Monday's

Generosity shouldn’t bankrupt your self-respect.

Here’s what I mean: You know that awkward moment when the bill hits the table and you just… pull out your card? Even though half that table ordered cocktails you didn’t drink? Yeah, that one.
A lot of us learned to buy love through money. Covering tabs, sending cash, “doing the most” so no one calls us selfish. But every time you do that, you tell your nervous system that your comfort doesn’t matter.
You can still be generous and have boundaries.
One doesn’t cancel the other.

Dollars and Sense

A client once confessed, “I always grab the whole check when we go out. I don’t want people to think I’m cheap.

I smiled because… whew, I knew that story too well. The one where generosity is how we prove we’re “good.” The one where paying for everyone feels easier than sitting in the discomfort of being seen as less than.

We practiced her saying one simple sentence: “Let’s just split it evenly today.”

She texted me that weekend: “I did it. My heart was racing, but honestly… I felt so much lighter.”

She didn’t just split a bill that night. . .she split from an old identity. The version of herself that equated love with overextending.

That’s what boundaries feel like, not cold, not selfish, but peaceful. The kind of peace that hums quietly after you honor your truth.

Before you offer to pay for someone, pause and ask:

💭 “Can I do this without resentment later?”

If the answer’s no, split the bill.

You’re not wrong for protecting your peace.

Dollars and Sense A few months ago, I was sitting across from a client who hadn’t checked her account in weeks. She was...
