Your Childhood Money Story is Showing. . .

Wealth and Wisdom
Monday's

You can honor your past without repeating it.

Translation: the way you grew up shaped you, but it doesn’t have to define your financial future.

Dollars and Sense

Growing up, my mom could stretch $20 into a week’s worth of groceries. She was a magician in the kitchen. Rice, beans, and creativity fed us when money was tight. Watching her taught me resilience, resourcefulness, and how to make something out of nothing.

But here’s the flip side: that survival mode followed me into adulthood. Even when my income grew, I still operated like that scared little girl who thought the money could run out at any second. I’d stockpile things I didn’t need “just in case,” or I’d deny myself joy because I thought wanting more was selfish.

And I know I’m not the only one. Maybe you grew up hearing “we can’t afford that” or watching bills stacked on the kitchen table.

Those childhood money stories don't disappear. They show up in how we spend, save, and even dream. The real work is pausing long enough to ask: Is this me? Or is this my childhood money story still running the show?

Before any big money move, pause and ask: Am I choosing from today’s values, or yesterday’s fears?

That “childhood wallet” voice helped you survive, but now you get to thank it and choose differently. That’s how you start writing a new money story.

Dollars and Sense A few months ago, I was sitting across from a client who hadn’t checked her account in weeks. She was...
